colonial era immigrants from northern England, Scotland and northern Ireland and their descendants, who thronged down the Appalachian chain and then, like their heroes Andrew Jackson and Sam Houston, kept going southwest.

This describes a strain of my wife's family but they got here via Canada, apparently along with a large number of their compatriots.

I get really tired of the stereotyping. Many of these folks settled in New England and skipped going South all together. They fought the wars for Independence and Emancipation and wanted nothing to do with the racism of the South. So they headed West via the Northern Territories and stopped (after fighting more wars) when they hit the beaches of the Pacific Ocean.

These are my ancestors.
