I think it's ultimately just another indirect bailout of the banks.

Ultimately it ALL goes back to the banks when it comes to the housing situation... Giving distressed home owners some relief would be the IMMEDIATE way of injecting capital into the banks (by helping people keep up their mortgage payments).. When people are delinquent in their payments, that money out of the banks pockets, while they can't be delinquent in paying out to their depositors.

I know that sounds a bit socialistic.. but the logic seems to stand.

I'm just being pragmatic.. The only question is the threshold that should be applied as to who gets the assistance and who doesn't.
