many got free boat rides into canada. one was prince edward island where they worked the land and eventually was given it. then as the island became over populated many left for the states in large numbers. the island has never returned to the population of around 1930.

The name for these people that was in vogue before PC, was "Hillbillys." I had a cousin who was stationed during WWII in DC and got engaged to one. When he took her to visit the family, it was an Appellation shack with Granny smoking a pipe. End of engagement.
