Re: "Senator McCain has made it clear that he expects to participate in the general election public financing system, and he hopes the Democratic nominee will do so as well," Brian Rogers, McCain spokesman, said in a statement....

Er... how does that square with the fact that his campaign has ALREADY FORMALLY sent a letter to the FEC stating that they want to pull out from the public finance system??????????

Is he maybe trying a bit of diversionary SPIN here, (for political advantage, I guess...), while not very many people are focusing on the actual details?

Or... does it signify that (despite sending that letter to the FEC a couple of month's back, stating that they wanted to pull out from the public finance system) since then they have changed their minds?

Leaning now *toward* taking public financing?

(Perhaps an indication of problems with their fund raising? Did you notice that they have not released their latest fund raising numbers yet, though the Dem rivals now have? If they had particularly good news to talk about on that front they probably would have told the Press about their latest results. I've heard that a lot of traditionally big GOP donors have yet to donate to McCain... and a significant portion of this donor base has been giving to the Dem nominees --- probably 'hedging their bets'....)
