Rolla, in the 1970s, my parents took photos of a thyroid operation in China using [allegedly] only acupuncture to avoid pain. So I'm aware [as I commented] that acupuncture is a way of interfering with normal pain reception. But stifling pain is not a cure of anything. That's just a way of separating one's brain from what's going on.

There are local anaesthetics too, which similarly interfere with pain transmission to the brain.
