I recall during my employed years I would ask embarrassing questions during the so-called 'family meetings' when senior officials would come to visit.

Questions like "When somebody says a damn lie in the press, why don't you challenge it? Fight back?" This kind of thing happened all the time, because my field was very politically contentious and polarized.

The answer was always something like, "It would cause more problems than it solved." Or something like that.

I think the real answer was simply that they were gutless and afraid to alienate constituencies that they themselves were friendly to. Maybe just plain gutless.

I had the same reaction you did to the White House challenging that stuff. I'm glad they spoke back, and think there should be more of it.
