From Goldman, Sachs:

In addition, Goldman's trading risk and results jumped in the quarter. It booked more than $100 million of trading gains on 28 days during in the latest quarter and the firm lost more than $100 million on six days. Both totals exceeded previous quarters and was attributed to higher levels of exposure and volatility in interest rates.

Twice during the quarter, Goldman's trading losses exceeded its Value at Risk (VaR) calculations of how much it estimated it could lose in a single day. Its daily VaR during the quarter, made with a 95% confidence rate, rose 28% sequentially to $171 million. Critics have said the company is too dependent on trading.
