I saw "Lonesome Dove" for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was excellent.

A few interesting tidbits from Wikipedia:

McMurtry originally developed the tale in 1972 for a feature film entitled The Streets of Laredo (a title later used for the sequel), which was to have starred John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and James Stewart, and be directed by Peter Bogdanovich, but plans fell through. McMurtry later resurrected the screenplay as a full-length novel, which became a bestseller and won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Must have been a mini series, on TNT I bet. As flaky as Ted Turner is, he's made some good series for that network. Rough Riders was really good, and the TNT production of East of Eden was a lot better than the movie that had James Dean in it. The movie picked up the story two thirds of the way in!

Only movie I liked better than the book was The Milagro Beanfield War.
