I had heard rumors that a split was coming, but now they are saying that they are actively pursuing a break up, with managment changes and investment bankers to go along with their announcement. Their publicly stated reasoning that it will be done to make the operations more management seems like a diversion. There are much larger companies than Emcore with many more divisions that do just fine. The split is to take advantage of the hot solar market in equities. That's good for current shareholders, and should be perceived well next week. The April 10th analyst open house must have something to do with this split announcement, so they can show The Street what they have and what they are worth.

The best way I've found to make money in the market is to trade on information you may have gathered from past press releases and SEC filings. Often the market ignores these early pronouncement and starts paying attention, and buying the stock accordingly, when the announcement is official and moving forward like Emcore just did. Why did they release it on a Friday after market close? Odd timing?!?
