I had quite a few frank discussions when there the second time.. I really didn't have the same interest the first time as I was actually amazed at how less 'closed' it was than I had imagined... I expected soldiers everywhere... I got McDonalds, Starbucks and Colonel Sanders in lieu.. We spoke with one person that didn't want to talk politics or social issues but that was not the norm...

I wonder where else in the world we see hubris and nationalism past and present... yet you admire or at least excuse it ;o) Maybe some folks in democratic countries ought to more afraid of their governments ? The governments are not afraid of the people.. They may lose power but rarely their pension and never their life :O)

OTOH I'm not be naive.. China is not the West... yet.. and may never be that free.. In some ways though our freedom is our folly... not that I'm prepared to forgo any though :O)
