I explained to him how he was really just another American

Actually I don't disagree here... however... there are certain cultural things that get lost when you do not preserve your language.. Like TJ's point on the home ownership issue... this is subjective IMO.. You may or may not agree on the value of preserving certain qualitative characteristics of a culture. Canadian culture is not a fixed thing... we just have to be careful to incorporate good stuff and keep out the crap... not always easy, especially with some groups..

All the Francophones in Quebec that want to get ahead and be able to transcend Quebec learn English, not all do. It is that simple. They are not French in the sense of France and you are perfectly correct in pointing that fact out to Bernie Pilon.

The term French is better replaced by French speaking maybe. I personally think multiple languages exercises the brain.. It is interesting studying Mandarin and noting just how contextual the language is.. a whole different part of the brain must be being used (mine hurts :O) that is not required in say English.. French comedy shows and humour are often just 'different' than English speaking ones, in Quebec anyway and so is British comedy from NA English speaking... no idea about France as that is not really relevant to me.. their culture is certainly not French Quebec culture.. There is probably a lot more commonality between Quebecers say and many New Englanders ( many actual cousins and cross border family ties in that neck of the woods) than there is with French from France... but yeah they all came here for a reason too :O)

If we all spoke the same language it might be more efficient but so are ants..
