Don't forget, the gasoline consumption tax by federal, states and cities has paid for the construction and maintenance of millions of miles of roadways, which in turn provide a market for the automobile economy to sell their products. The gasoline consumption tax is paid for by users not auto companies, so I'm not sure what you are referring to by saddled. In any case, motor fuel taxes pay for roads, which is why auto companies have a market. Perhaps, it would be better if the auto companies had to build the roads themselves? I see Saturn (GM) as missing the boat in the current economy with rising oil/gasoline prices. The American consumer is looking for fuel efficiency, and Saturn (GM) is not delivering. Watch their sales plumet over the next two years. I couldn't believe that little Saturn car gets less mpg than my 2002 Saturn SL-1 sedan. Not moving in the right direction.
