Ah, so you know Brazil? Perhaps better than I? Yes, I spent a little time in Bela Horizonte (on way to Ouro Preto), and they seemed very friendly and curious. My next trip I will look further south. I stayed in Angra dos Reis for two months, the Verde Costa is my fav.

I think the key to handling some of the risks is to get hooked up with friends. I have good instincts about people, and the people I know there were very protective of me. I have been warned about the kidnapping risk, I don't think I'm naive, but I'm just not sure if I'm a good target? I'm 6'1", 200 pounds (mostly muscle), have some boxing/fighting training, and intend to carry maze when in unfamiliar areas. Brazilians are small people. Of course I will be getting older. They could have my cash on hand, but I would not be taken without serious resistance. I do stand out (think people thought I was German, and I am a fourth, another fourth Norweigan) however, your point is taken.
