One of the things I remember about Allen Greenspan was a line in his testimony to congress that there "was no constituency for spending cuts". That needs to change. Congress has a approval rating in the low 20% range and that needs to be hammered home along with the reasons why. Stopping the payroll deductions and making people send in their taxes on their "own" would also help them "feel" the burden. Congress does not have the balls to try that.

As far as my votes in 2000 & 2004 given the opportunity of hindsight and the same choices, I would still not vote for Gore or Kerry. In fact, given the choice between Obama\Clinton or a third Bush term, I clearly would not go the more socialist route.

Tony Snow had a good line on health care in the U.K. the other day....it went something like.."if you have a rotten tooth, buy a pair of pliers"....I don't believe for a second that any of the democrat choices in 00, 04, or 08 would have led to less government or more fiscal responsibility. If you do, then fine....we differ.
