I suspect a lot of Chinese would rather have had the British Empire running the show than the Maostic MADness of the CCP I think you mixed up the political atmosphere before 1997 and after that. Before the handover from British rule to beijing's, people of course were speculating about the prc central government as to whether they can promise hk autonomy for at least 50 years. Some chinese had opposite idea and escaped, but now most of them have returned back and live in peaceful environment. They've found out the progress have improved enormously. To your surprise, most hong kong people do not want to see British ruling class being assigned by the Queen without their voting rights. Same is true for today, as the prc planned to have democractic election in 2012, so as to let the people to choose their leader of choice. Another factor people want rule change is the economy of China and the currency. HK people begins to lose interest on HKD and they open RMB savings accounts to earn high interests. Had the British ruler still stayed in HK, HK people would have less choice to choose from in currency accounts. And the HKD will eventually have to peg with RMB. So it is inevitable one China two systems work so great in this way. The influx of money from mainland after 1997 handover really change the city tremendously with more advanced public facilities. Other Chinese mainland cities try to play catch up with no stone but cement in high-rising buildings. I see more westerners are settling their families in HK more than before, and you can't deny the fact that hk is one of the best cities on earth. The term Mao or Maoris is really unheard of in young people's mind which stay very independent for themselves, as they always think of themselves as being HKers rather than mainland Maoist Chinese. Poverty and murder always be there in mainland ... and also in around the world, whether you want to make excuse to launch a military invasion or hiring hitman doing poisoning stuff, it happens all the time in political scene. How do you remove a few powerful bankers in the world ? No way ! They will murder you.
