September 2002 - Total war costs estimated at $100-200 billion by then-White House economic adviser Lawrence Lindsey. The White House openly contradicted him, saying the figure was too high. Then-White House budget director Mitch Daniels estimated $50-60 billion in late 2002.

March 2008 - U.S. troop deaths reach 4,000. Troops: 158,000; $1.3 trillion for total economic costs of Iraq war from 2002 to 2008, according to a November 2007 report from Congress' Joint Economic Committee.

Projections - Troops: 140,000 by the end of July. Unofficial goal expressed by Defense Secretary Robert Gates for December: 100,000. War costs at more than $508 billion so far, according to the National Priorities Project.
