You lost me there. Why is China's "real wealth" (what is that?) going to decline if their currency appreciates against the dollar? Remember, they can hand us their higher valued currency and buy our goods cheaper and thus have a better standard of living as a result. At least, that is what the free trade advocates say when it is the other way around.

AFAIK, the dollar going down has hurt me, not helped me. I found that out on my last vacation.

Economists tend to latch on to whichever angle they want to hype of any change. The dollar is strong => that means consumers get more cheap imports, so our lives improve. The dollar is weak => we can export more, so our lives will improve. Nobody seems to be able to do a convincingly detailed accounting of all the +/-'s to arrive at a good answer.
