You might want to consider that: 1) The Chinese are smart as hell, and very dedicated. 2) There are 1.3B of them vs. 300M of us. Are they smarter than Americans? I'd dispute that. Not saying their dumber either (although on the average they are less educated, many of those 1.3bil are in poor rural areas) There are more of them, which doesn't really effect the equation much. Smaller countries don't automatically have larger trade deficits in proportion. As they develop and move up the ladder in to more sophisticated production they will also get wealthier and be a big market for other countries exports. Even the biggest markets don't generally have economies of scale such that one company serving the world market will have a serious scale advantage over two or 10 companies serving the market. Intel and Microsoft come to mind. Microsoft is sort of a special case because of copyright law. Since no one else can legally copy and produce Windows, MS is protected. Intel might be the best example for your argument (although there probably are some others). And even Intel faced a serious challenge from AMD for awhile, and potentially may again. I didn't say there wasn't any exceptions I said "GENERALLY" not "always". Also to the extent that Intel has such a large advantage, its not based on cheap manufacturing labor. If it can see off AMD and other challengers it also may be able to see off Chinese challengers. We do have a way better Constitution and Government And overall better infrastructure (despite all the talk of "crumbling infrastructure"), and proximity to market (the US is the biggest market, to the extent that China itself becomes a bit market this can change, but if China becomes such a big market they will also import more)
