The truth is that any man who enlists in the military for whatever reason under any circumstances gets my respect; I don't care what he did before he enlisted. And he's a better man than any who doesn't.

I didn't feel this way when I was subject to the draft during Vietnam, but as I've grown older, I think it was a mistake that I didn't serve. It is one of those things that if you don't do it, once you're too old, you don't get another chance. I'd be in Iraq today if they could use me.

Personally, I think mandatory government service (whether military or otherwise) ought to be the law. It would solve a ton of problems and might cause some of these idiots who have no respect for what we have in America to take a new view of it.
