OT: I think there is an entire middle/upper middle class suburban public school demographic that is quickly changing that paradigm.

crap like no child left behind? crap because we implemented something basic like reading, writing and math. test scores forced schools to at least teach basics and perhaps we may get kids coming out of school that can read and count their change?

then again i hear they teach them the answers to the tests and still do not learn how to read , write or do basic math.

the system has failed, money continues to be thrown at a deep hole.

to prepare children to function in society they do need the basics, perhaps there is another method to teach children about social studies through churches, or other organized programs. Maybe we need to cut over to trade education , service jobs etc. as a prime in later jr high , or hs grades, vs more social studies, those who show the desire to continue to college can concentrate on a college prep program.
