Logistics Firm Profits From Watching Costs BY CHRISTINA WISE INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY Posted 4/8/2008 View Long-Term Investor Screen A number of stocks have broken out of bases since the March 20 follow-through — including a few long-term investment candidates. One such stock is C.H. Robinson Worldwide. (CHRW) It broke out March 24, moving past a 56.66 buy point in above-average volume. But it had a tough time holding onto its gains and fell back to its 10-week moving average in the days that followed. It's not unusual for a stock to pull back after its initial breakout attempt. Think of it as a pause as the stock gears up to head higher. That seems to be what happened in C.H. Robinson's case. It found support at the 10-week line, then resumed its climb. If you missed the initial breakout, this gave you a second chance to buy it. The company connects shippers and freight haulers, providing freight transport and logistics support. It operates a network of 214 offices throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. Although fuel costs have risen, the firm has kept a lid on expenses and used technology to gain market share. It has churned out a steady stream of earnings the past six quarters, with EPS gains ranging from 20% to 29%. Its sales growth was 4% to 19% during the same time period. In a January report, analysts at BB&T Capital Markets noted if transport prices continue to drop, it might hurt the firm's bottom line. But they also said, "regardless of some head winds to the model, we view (C.H. Robinson Worldwide) as a best-in-class operator and a name to stick with in an uncertain economic environment."
