I'd like to be pleasantly surprised, but I'm confident I won't. I see Russia returning to, or continuing, their traditional past, in a manner very similar to Mexico. The Viking tribe known as the Rus or Rusks entered Russia in the 9th century and set up trading posts, the largest of these trading posts was later called Kiev. In time these Viking came to rule the slaves (Slavs) who were indigenous to this land, and the land took on the name of Russia. In the period after 1700 or so, all of the aristocracy/landowners spoke and wrote French while the peasants spoke Slavic/Russian and were almost universally illiterate. My Great-great-great Grandfather Alexander Herzen learned Russian from the servants and wrote the first novel written in Russian "Who is to Blame" in 1847. This was followed by others like Tolstoy who in 1865 wrote "War and Peace" in Russian before rewriting it in French. As in Mexico, this led to a culture in Russia where the elite truly consider themselves to be a different group and culture than the other 98% of their nation. Even during the communist period, my Great-grandfather a surgeon, had remained behind and remarried. His daughter also a surgeon, Natalia Petrovna, lived in a three room apartment one block from Red Square with a Zil limousine and a driver - and most unimaginable of all, regularly traveled to Paris to visit my family there and go shopping. All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. After Gorbachev, Russia went from bad to worse and has finally clawed their way back to bad. The 5'6" midget Putin has Napoleonic traits and controls a great deal of oil wealth so long as he has access to power. He has integrated the government with the Oligarchs, and has destroyed the Oligarchs who chose not to cooperate with his new order. None of this in any way benefits the 98% who are not part of the aristocracy, nor do I see this changing. Like Mexico, everything is state controlled. The difference is in Russia the 98%, the slaves, are more rigidly controlled so they don't have to be paid as many subsidies or jobs. This Mexican tradition started by Porfirio Diaz who said that "A dog with a bone in his mouth won't bark or bite." In Russia, when a dog barks or bites Putin simply puts them in a gulag. .
