The problem that I have right now with immigration policy is that the US government does not have one. We have laws passed in the 1960's when our population was much smaller and the quotas have not changed to reflect our current situation. The fact that our economy did not collapse from the weight of recent waves of immigrants is evidence that the illegal immigration numbers plus the legal immigration numbers would be a more realistic quota. Most opponents of criminal immigration are not xenophobic and would support increased quotas of legal immigrants coupled with effective enforcement.

I don't blame those who argue that we should immediately legalise every person who came here illegally. Their arguments have not been effective to date. Legalizing crimes does not eliminate the moral hazard.
