I can think of two arguments for taxing the rich more. The idea that you mention, that it is more fair (which is particularly strong on the left, but isn't limited to the left).

And one other point. You the rich have more ability to pay. If your trying to extract as much as possible, you want to tax the rich more. Of course if you go to far you damage the economy and encourage people to try to legally or illegally reduce reported income. And also I don't want to try to extract as much as possible, but for some people that or something close to it is the objective.

It was interesting to note that while the Clintons "earned" over $100 million since he left office they did not elect to voluntarily pay taxes based on the higher rates they claim that everyone else should pay.

The reasoning for taxing the rich more has only to do with this as far as the democrats go and nothing else:

Why tax the rich more? Because.......... only because, in a democrats mind, it's not fair that they have so much when everyone else has so much less. They don't care that they'll make us all poorer as a consequence...... If they don't have the emotional, superficial answers they probably wouldn't get reelected......

The reasons for taxing the rich are many. As Tim pointed out it is more efficient, it takes fewer rich to collect any amount. It is also the redistributionist philosophy you allude to.

It is instructive though to witness what people like the Clintons who have the option of paying the tax rates they claim to want to enforce on everyone else but decline the opportunity to be "fair" with their windfall profits.
