Perhaps we are talking cross purposes but I don't see how your answer is a response to my statement.

My own view is that so long as successive US administrations fail to address the negative consequences (not the net consequences) of global trade, just so long will those issues percolate through politics. Whatever the actual cause, there is lots of concern, anger, whatever percolating among the electorate that will continue to grow, continue to have a growing effect on congressional elections.

We noticed it, again, in the 06 elections. It's appearing in this year's Dem primary race. It will appear in the 08 general elections. And it will grow. And spread across parties.

we should eliminate the bad policies and replace them with savings-friendly, consumption-hostile ones.

And as you say the candidates are not talking ..... the need to cut our consumption and increase our savings. The only one who was was Huckabee. The response by people on this thread demonstarte how hard this mindset is going to be to change. The immediate response is to throw up hands and yell "regressive tax".
