Ergo the Detroit execs cutting their salaries would make the companies profitable?

That way of thinking is exactly what has doomed the US. a harmonious relationship between the management and its work force is the cornerstone of a successful company. When CEO have that huge payout including golden umbrellas (Home Depot CEO), it becomes a barrier and gives rise to unions.

You just need to look at successful startups here in Silicon valley and the big corporations in Detroit and elsewhere. By the way, the Toyota business model in the US has its roots in the Toyota plant which is located in the northern fringes of Silicon valley in CA.
