you:

SPSN: Short Interest UP 11.2% to 18.4M at the End of Mar 2008

me:

Yeah, that's pretty much the way I've been seeing it. The low volume and the pattern of action has been telling me that the shorts were covering the buying, trying to keep the price down as few shares were being sold by the holders of SPSN. Of course that strategy costs the shorts money.

I'm really interested in seeing how deep the guys/gals pockets are that have been doing the buying lately? This has looked to be almost exclusively, big boy/girl buying, which is just what SPSN needs to get the price going. So far the buyers have been willing to nudge the shorts into selling. I wonder how much above $3 they are willing to go to get shares and just how many shares they plan on accumulating now that the earning news is out.

It wouldn't surprise me if this buying was all about putting the shorts in a bind, but the more rational side of me thinks there is more to the buying than just that. Actually, the buyers probably have both things in mind. Another thing I've been wondering is just how much pressure the shorts can stand before they start to break ranks? With no one selling all this buying has got to be causing some consternation among the shorts.

The next phase of the buying attack may be to gradually start raising the price of SPSN. This action would most likely force the shorts to continue covering the buying while not causing the short herd to panic, at least for the time being. We're still a week away from earnings and the CC which may be the catalyst needed to get the shorts closing their positions in a big way?

What's really interesting is the way the buyer/buyers have been milking the shorts out of their shares. Both the buyers and the shorts are pros and know exactly what their doing and the risks involved. Still, so far the shorts probably remain way ahead and aren't too worried. As usual though, some will stay at the party too long.
