Peru Doe Run smelter says production hit by strike

Workers at Peru`s La Oroya smelter and metallurgical facility struck for a third day on April 7, partially cutting production at the US-owned company, an official said.

The facility, located 108 miles (174 km) east of the capital Lima, processes iron, zinc, copper, silver and gold. Workers downed tools on April 5 to pressure for better working conditions and a share of profits.

Peruvian law requires mining companies to share a portion of their profit with their workers. "This stoppage is affecting the continuity of operations," said Victor Belaunde, a spokesman for the company.

"The strike has had an impact, but it is a partial impact," he said, declining to comment further on output. Roughly 90% of the union`s 1,720 workers were on strike, said Anibal Carhuapoma, secretary general of the La Oroya metallurgical workers union.

He said the strike could continue through this week. Last year, Doe Run Peru produced 120,000t of iron, 60,000t of copper and 40,000t of zinc. "We invite the company to talk and we hope for a call from Doe Run," said the union leader.

Peru is the world`s second-largest producer of copper and zinc and its fifth-largest producer of gold. It is the largest silver producer in the world. – Mining Journal
