I have been for timetables for years but recognize that any timetable given has to stretch for a couple of years. Timetables are good if they are reasonable and believable. Its like deterrence too. At some point, you have to follow thru even if the maliki govt fails. But at the same time you need to incent the malike govt too.

The unrest, turmoil and Iraq will not be resolved "until the Christian army withdraws from Arab lands." The Sunni-shia rivalry will resolve itself with mediation by countries like Iran, Syria and Egypt. Now Israel may not feel secure with that approach. But then let Israel shell out money to support Us troops in Iraq.

Actually, Obama wants to leave a brigade there to guard the Green Zone and to continue to train Iraqi troops. He just believes that our troops have no business being on the front lines of a civil war between Sunnis and Shia. He'd also rather bulk up our presence in Afghanistan, esp along Pakistan's border and go after the real bad guys.

To sum up, he's being smart about the job we have to do over there. Iraq is an expensive diversion.
