I forget the German girl's name, but she was quite pretty and fun to be around.

That's an interesting history you provided there. Thanks.

I've seen the Saranac Lake region in detail probably unmatched by most visitors to the area, because my job took me on basically every road in the entire county (and others), and from there deep into the woods. Also, I had to ascertain ownership of the properties, so knocked on doors to ask.

The objective of my visits was to take measurements on trees so as to establish an inventory of forest resources. Some smaller landowners were suspicious that we were surveying for missile sites, which was pretty amusing to us at the time. This was in the late 60s, and I haven't been back since.

I'm glad I was able to see that segment of society, but anybody who thinks I admire those big estate-holding rich people has another think coming. Most of them either inherited the land from somebody who obtained the fortune by being unusually ruthless, or were unusually ruthless themselves.

However, I do not denigrate their many accomplishments. It's OK to get rich by accomplishing stuff. I met a couple of them who were actually quite cordial and nice. One lady was picking up trash along the long lane to her estate when I met her. Like her, the others put their pants on one leg at a time.
