<Mi>... but WHY THEY FELT COMPELLED TO TURN OVER THEIR SOVEREIGN INDIVIDUALITY TO A SLICK-TALKING CHARISMATIC FIGURE.

I think a lot of it is because of the tecnique of brain-washing.

I have personal experience because my daughter was a 'victim' of a slick-talking charismatic creep. At the time my daughter was 23 and a University grad with honors and the creep was 48.

The story ends well but it took several years.

Possibly one reason people turn over their sovereign individuality is that they never knew they had it in the first place. A perfect example is Cuba. Those folks are now several generations under Castro and his brainwashing. Only the Cubans who escaped and now live in Miami know about their rights. Those still in Cuba believe (for the most part) they are pretty well off because they've never seen otherwise. My heart goes out to those little girls in Texas.
