Does doing it in pinch mean a long protracted process to you?

Its long for the process to complete. Its not so long for it to start. Some goods would be available right away from other sources. Others could be available soon. Others would take a moderate amount of time, and others would take a long time, at least to get sufficient numbers. (In the meantime the goods would be available in smaller numbers, at higher prices).

I'm not trying to claim there would be no pain, only that you seem to be exaggerating the level of and duration of the pain.

And btw, don't you think that before you can actually redirect all the resources and training to the low end work the battle is likely over?

I was assuming a long term change.

If China is irrational enough to halt trade with the US, you would think it would require that they be seriously pissed off not just experimenting with some short term strategy. They would already be risking their own regimes stability (unless it was very short term, and if it was that short than the harm caused to the US would also not be so massive)
