MacArthur by refusing to hang Hirohito left them some dignity to "hang" on to.

The Germans got no dignity left. Some might even argue they never had any but that's a different story.

On the morning after the mass hanging of their war criminals, where it was incorrectly reported that Goring was one of them - the article was in print before the feast was over - the street comments went like this: 'At least they didn't get our Hermann'.

He wasn't very popular during the war when his Luftwaffe did nothing to prevent them from being bombed back to the basics, but he sure won their sympathy during the trials.

As for the France as commented on by CJ, what can I say?

They do have great oysters though.
