Should also mention that the 555th, an all black airborne unit that wasn't integrated into WWII combat was also assigned as smokejumpers. Certainly it was and remains dangerous work and honorable service.

They're doing just that now, LindyBill. Last summer when I was on the lookout, there was a 300 acre fire burning on Harrington Ridge about eight miles south of us. It blew up a couple weeks later, and there were several other large fires in the discovery area of the lookout we had been in. Thousands of acres on fire. They were all let-burn fires.

In 1962 when I had my first summer on lookout they would have contained those fires at a few acres by jumping on them. They did just that on a fire across East Moose Creek way up in the goat rocks.

Back then we wanted to find fires more than anything. Here's a little story I posted some time back:
