you are twisting what "silver spoon" means. Less than 1% (way less IMO) are born with a silver spoon and still have that silver spoon when they are ~17 and go to college and still have it when they finish college.

People's position within our economy shifts; you assume it is static.

You think there are those who "live[] a hard life like most Americans" and those with a silver spoon (and silver fork, knife, soup spoon and 7 or 15 more settings).

It would be more accurate to have 3 (or more) classes, including those in the middle ("middle class") who are in neither of your two groups.

We are not going to agree on this MM. You are making a lot of assumptions both about Obama being "common" and Hillary having a "silver spoon". You ignore the facts I present about Hillary's grandfather being working class, and all the elite schools Obama attended without being able to verify if he had to work.(Which was your main point about Hillary--that she didn't have to work).

MM, you are not being precise here and are reaching with the statement "Only die-hard Hillary fans would dispute that in some cynical attempt to pretend she's lived a hard life like most Americans".

That's not what our debate was about. Nobody is "pretending" (or at least not me---here) that Hillary's life was "hard". The issue was, as you framed it, how could she have much in common with the rest of us because she didn't have to work in college. (If that's not what you were arguing--correct me.)

I countered that by saying it doesn't appear Obama had to "work" either so that can't be a basis fo a valid distinction (in the way you are using it.)

Also your statement "Hillary was obviously born with a "silver spoon" is just a blatant assertion and, IMHO, a misuse and mischaracterization of the language (inasmuch the term "silver spoon" is not applied to people of Hillary's family's economic status and work ethic.) You are, I suggest, "smearing" her by doing this.

It's the same as if I said "Obama, obviously has had all the advantages because he was/is a smart person of color. He's been given all kinds of entitlements because of that for which the rest of us has have had to work."

Obviously, any of us can say anything we want. But where does that leave one--except in a shouting match? This approach is not one Obama would endorse, IMHO.
