Uncle Sam runs Medicare, and does it half-way well. My theory has long been that since funding for most health care services already comes from third parties, it means that in effect we already do have socialized medicine. It is merely a matter of bringing it all under a common denominator.

The real problem with having a national health care system is not that it wouldn't work - it would. As far as stupidity and waste are concerned -- what we have now is pretty hard to beat. The problem is that it would make the federal government too powerful. Handing over to the boys and girls on the Capitol Hill another 2+ trillion dollars to manage would be a great mistake - in the long run.

Many in the health care industry who today oppose nationalization would become dependent on it for their livelihood. Try convincing doctors and hospitals at this time to abolish Medicare..... Once a socialized system is in place, it's practically impossible to go back.
