Pirates Release Luxury French Yacht And Crew

4/11/2008 9:19:09 AM Somali pirates have released a luxury French yacht and its 30-member crew a week after it was hijacked off the coast of Somalia, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Friday.

“The French armed forces resolved the hostage-taking without incident,” a statement issued by Sarkozy said.

Attackers stormed the yacht “Le Ponant” last Friday while it was returning without passengers from the Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean, toward the Mediterranean Sea.

French authorities made contact with the pirates on Sunday and sent an elite intervention group to Djibouti, which borders Somalia, to reinforce negotiations, the French Foreign Ministry said.

The crew comprising the French and the Filipinos are safe, the statement said.

Somali coastal waters are among the most hazardous in the world, from where pirates seized more than 25 ships last year.
