They need to make profit when times are good. Because times aren't always going to be good. If they don't have R&D/exploration money you're gonna be paying a lot more for gas going forward.

People forget about this aspect of the oil bidness and that they have to pay for this, as well as for billion-dollar oil rigs to get it out of the ground and the cost of transporting crude from god-knows-where to get it to a refinery.

I'm sure Exxon takes its share, but the cost of crude has risen substantially -- do they not realize that gasoline will go up when crude goes up.

And as pointed out previously, gasoline is still cheaper than bottled water, beer, or coca-cola.
