The total mining production for the three months ended February 2008, after seasonal adjustment, decreased by 5.2 percent compared with the previous three months, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Thursday.

The decrease of 5.2 percent was due to a decrease of 11.1 percent in the production of gold and a decrease of 4.1 percent in the production of non-gold minerals.

The major contributors to the decrease of 5.2 percent were the production of platinum group metals (-2.3 percentage points), gold (-1.5 percentage points) and diamonds (-1.5 percentage points).

Total mining production for the three months ended February 2008 decreased by 6.4 percent compared with the three months ended February 2007, Stats SA said.

The actual total mining production for February 2008 decreased by 7.3 percent compared with February 2007.

Gold production decreased by 28.2 percent for the period February 2008 compared with February 2007.

Gold production after seasonal adjustment decreased by 7.7 percent for February 2008 when compared with January 2008.
