I think it is safe to say that some form of supplemental insurance would be needed even if Medicare was expanded to include everybody.

I'm assuming that if we had universal government insurance that the benefits would be similar to Medicare, which has some pretty big gaps. Maybe if we could demonstrate some cost savings we could eventually move to a more generous Canadian-type payout but I wouldn't assume that. The Medicare we have now is losing money.
