That's because of higher tax rates. In the 50-60s taxes were 17% of the household budget, now they are over 35%. The gov taxes everything (some times they call it fees to make you feel good)

I consider that a cultural problem, though most people perceive it to be an economic one.

One reason why homes are so expensive here in Orange County, CA, for example, is because of competition. Most households are dual-income, but that just drives up prices.

And then there's the problem with half the cars at the local elementary school being luxury SUVs ...
