So am I to understand that Obama was talking about this type of very small section of the populace? So he is characterizing the white families in these towns like this probably trailer park inhabitants who probably dont vote anyway. This is really a large voting block.

I doubt these people were any better off during the industrial hey day of Pittsburgh. This area is very prosperous now I have family there and have visited it regularly for 30 years. Of course the really poor misfits are an exception not the rule. No doubt there is a section of struggling people not enjoying the high paying jobs. But they are not as a majority portrayed in your post.

When he is addressing poor white families struggling I am thinking some households much closer to the ~$50K national mean.

I dont care who you are, if you are a stranger walking into one of those neighborhoods they are going to be critical. Being black would just one of the reasons to be recipient of some divisive comments.
