FF, absolutely. the key is glycemic load. glycemic load is the amount of carbs and the rate at which it converts to blood glucose and it indicates how much insulin you will produce in response to eating said carbs.

i used to be a big fan of all the high glycemic, oil sponge foods. not so much now. i no longer eat to satisfy cravings and for good taste.

i now eat to feel very good and for taste.

i've substituted good tortilla for my bread. i really like la banderita 8 grain tortillas that you can find online for $1.99 per 8 pack. i often eat them plain as they are almost zone balanced.

romero's low carb tortillas are a flour version that some will like more, but i prefer the 8 grain. romero's low carb is almost zone balanced, too, but it is a little light on carbs. remember to subtract the fiber content from the carb content to get your insulin stimulating carb content.

my son gets peanut butter and jelly wraps (in a tortilla) with some cottage cheese or low fat string cheese on the side.

as for pasta, dr sears sells a zone pasta. i haven't tried it yet, but i'll let you know if it is any good when i do. i also loved pasta, the oilier the better, but i don't miss it as it makes me feel bad.

1 cup thin linguini has a glycemic load of 4424. that will give you same insulin response as 2 snickers bars or 11 teaspoons of sugar. most folks will eat more like 2 cups - so that's 4 snickers or 22 teaspoons full of sugar.

dr sears ggives a brief overview of the zone philosophy here:

remember carbs are not bad. too many carbs without any nutrients are bad. too few carbs are bad, too. you were either designed or evolved to eat fruits, veggies and nuts, so it seems intuitively obvious to me that one will attain peak human performance eating meat (we now know lean is preferable) fruits and veggies and nuts.

you don't have to marry the zone up front. just make a commitment for a month and then see how it goes. dr. sears has recommended eating a big fat pasta meal once a month to drive home the fact you will feel absolutely awful after doing so.

FF, the zone defines good carbs as those with a lower glycemic load and a plethora of micronutrients. the zone defines bad carbs as high glycemic load and few, if any micronutrients.

one caveat, the zone is truly a different experience. hormones play a *huge* role in how you feel and whether you crave food in general or bad carbs and sweets in particular.

when i started two people on the zone, they both said the same thing, word for word - "i'm going to be hungry." beginning with the first meal, neither was ever hungry.

manuel uribe has been on a ~2000 calorie diet since he was 1230 lbs (he's now under 800) and he isn't hungry or depressed (the fish oil (epa/dha) played a roll, too, but the balance of macronutrients was huge here, too).

manuel was likely eating in excess of 10k calories a day and was hungry all the time. now he eats ~2k calories and isn't hungry. that's because the 10k calories obliterated his hormonal balance while the 2k calories balances it and provides adequate levels of protein to feed his body and carbs to feed his mind.

also, bad carbs arent' entirely restricted - just don't eat them all the time and use them as a condiment instead of the main portion of the meal. this won't be hard as you your cravings for carbs will greatly diminish when you insulin stops spiking and driving down your blood glucose, which starves your brain of its fuel - blood glucose.

while these testimonials might sound too good to be true, i believe them to be 100% true based on personal experience.

the zone truly is another world and the genius is in its simplicity and uncommon common sense. it still amazes me how much impact something so simple can make in one's life.

you'll probably notice i'm posting early today - i did finally get sick and call in after 13 months of not missing a sick day due to an illness of mine. the zone hasn't made me bulletproof, but my health is quantifiably better - and while i feel pretty crappy right now, i usually feel worse.

i'd encourage everyone to do a little experiment - try the zone for 2 weeks and see what kind of result you get. you eat lean meat, fruits, veggies and nuts - exactly what you were designed or evolved to eat. how bad can eating what you are supposed to be eating be?

if you are significantly over weight, you can expect to feel much better, have less cravings and *effortlessly* lose over 5 lbs (2-4 lbs of fat, the rest water weight).

a two week trial to reduce your risk factors (tg/hdl, fasting insulin levels) for almost every chronic disease out there seems like cheap insurance to me.
