A great many years ago when my father was Deputy Chief of the Colorado State Patrol, the warden at the state penitentiary gave him a bloodhound pup from a recent litter his dog had. He knew about my brother and me and that we didn't currently have a dog. We named the dog "Warden". Could never do a thing in the way of training, so my dad gave "Warden" to the US Army (WW II days, then). Weeks later, as I recall, we got a letter from the Army saying the dog was untrainable and they were shipping him back to us... at our expense, of course. Needless to say, my dad put a quick halt to that expense. He never told my brother and me about the fate of "Warden", but as I grew older I figured it out.
