The US media has reverted to 18th-19thC English terms when describing American demographics. Middle class is referred to as "the working class". What does that make government bureaucrats & academia?--the non-working class?..sounds about right. Neither group has produced worthwhile results lo these many yrs.

19thC English writers used the "gentry" for landowners,
"working class" for shopkeepers and "laborers" for those on the lowest rung of the economic ladder.
