what is your historical perspective of the good or bad unions have done?

My attitude about unions is much like my attitude about Rev Wright. Outlived their usefulness, turned into an obstacle.

Unions played an important role in this country once upon a time. Their contribution was positive and critical. Once they had accomplished their mission, the kept going getting progressively more shrill and less meaningful. Their officials had become an industry much like civil rights advocates and they turned toward feeding their own entity as much as helping their constituency. And those are the unions that are not actually corrupt. There are now three interest groups in negotiations, the company, the workforce, and the union. There should be only two. It's time for unions to go. At best they are just overhead. At best.
