I think that many well intended organizations as well as ideas can be corrupted with the greed of the leaders. If one goes back to reading the books about unions.. Sinclair Lewis comes to mind one would be for them. I was.

However, then money got involved. The members paid dues and those at the top got greedy. They did some good but the
corruption represented decay...

It's the same for political systems. As well intended as communism was it corrupted itself. Oversimplification to be sure but essentially corruption ultimately destructs,

That is why when this expose on the corruption in Iraq shown on 60 minutes upset me so much. Why our tax dollars to regenerate their economy when our own is suffering.
The money they have wasted. The way the contractors there have gotten rich... All well intended but it has self destructed and I think it is ultimately doomed.

I don't think any thing is perfect and I appreciate what you said Karen and also Ron but I still think that winning in Iraq has got to include getting rid of the corruption as you don't think that the ordinary citizen there doesn't know what is going on ? It may be one reason for the continued rise of recruiting for the terrorists.. Disgust at the newly formed and ineffectual government.

....and when the jobs leave you will blame who? My experience with unions is mixed. When fully in charge they are as corrupt and destructive as any evil capitalist.

You may recall an earlier conversation we had on this topic, Bob. I don't think unions are one of the main reasons jobs leave the US, perhaps not even enough of a reason to count. Though I grant you that would depend on the specific situation.

As for the possibility of corruption, that's not a reason not to have unions. Rather it's a reason, as with business itself, to have both laws and effective enforcement mechanisms to deal with them.
