Glenn -

The death of much of the blogosphere would be no great loss. In any case, what I said was that the story barely rose above the level of a smear. And in saying that, I was referring to the blog post. I think, in retrospect, i may have been too generous.

The Hot Air post simply took part of the story out of context, spun it shamelessly, and put a misleading headline on it. You can call that whatever you want.

Having now read the original article, I now see that Newsday provided more balance, though they did use the phrase "quietly slipped" to describe how Obama entered the offices of the law firm. As if he isn't followed everywhere by the press, for crying out loud.

And despite the opinions of some of the "analyst" quoted for the story, I would say that there is a difference between lobbyists and lawyers. I would also say that using "analysts" opinions in a news story blurs the line between reporting and editorializing.

Then once again there is the ludicrous stretch of bringing Jack Abramoff's name into the story, as if he has had anything to do with that company for years. This is a firm that cooperated in the investigation that led to Abramoff's conviction, after all.

I agree with that. If I am leading off with comments made by another poster, I will put that material in italics to identify it.

In addition, however, where the rest of the post contains material from more than one source, I agree that the poster should as clearly as possible identify the material that comes from each source. I didn't do that.
