If EEStor's product can only do half of what has been claimed, they will have a tiger by the tail. Hence the skepticism.

The thing that limits any large scale switch from oil is energy storage. Solar, either PV or solar-thermal, and wind suffer from this problem. In addition, it could be very valuable for power peaking. At the moment, we need to build electrical capacity to meet peak power needs. However, if we could run the plants at peak production and store the excess, we could more efficiently use our existing plants. And that means we could rely on our existing capacity even as we use more power on the average.

EEStor claims an energy density that is higher than the best batteries. In addition, they charge faster and don't degrade over their lifetime. No limit on charge cycles, either. And it isn't expensive, EEStor is claiming they can sell a version suitable for automotive use for around $2000.

Bottom line, this would change the game. Now, for automotive use, a big question is what kind of failure modes can be expected. The energy density is on the order of a small bomb. It isn't inconceivable that it could explode in a severe enough accident. While it might make cleanup a bit easier, that really isn't desirable behavior. However, for power peaking and other power plant needs, it still would be a huge winner.
