BC, it is human nature to be selfish and self centered. most church organizations aren't much better than any other kind of organization - they look out for #1.

i can honestly say that there isn't a church i can ethically support. my son goes to a lutheran private school which we like a lot, so i'm not anti-church, per se. however, i can't support a consistently selfish message - get yourself saved and send in the cash - as coming from god.

tithing is another issue altogether as tithes were paid on agriculture (perhaps animals, too, i can't recall off hand), not on coin transactions - and yes, there was lots of gold and coins back in the day... too bad the truth about tithing is rarely told. it isn't about helping an organization that makes one feel valuable, rather, it is about helping people truly in need without the desire to receive anything back. helping people isn't just writing a check and washing one's hands... it is much more profound than that.

we all are selfish in nature, but at least the churches could get the real message out instead of the one that serves their interests... making church goers feel good about themselves and then using peer pressure to maximize donations.
